As of December 1, 2011 the Google Translate option in Japan Goggles and China Goggles will no longer give translations. This is due to a decision by Goggle to completely shut off the free translation service to all third party applications on that date.

You can read more about it at:

http://code.google.com/apis/language/translate/overview.html

Naturally, their decision caused quite a reaction from the developer community as you can see at:

http://googlecode.blogspot.com/2011/05/spring-cleaning-for-some-of-our-apis.html

Fortunately, the Goggles’ built-in dictionary will remain perfectly functional. With more than 100 000 entries for each app, the Goggles should work well in most cases. Besides, there is no longer a need for the Goggles to access the Internet which may be useful if you are on an expensive data plan.

Sometimes you can recognize text easier with your Japan Goggles or China Goggles just by trying these simple tricks:

Use the zoom in button

When in live camera mode trying to read some small print text in Japanese or Chinese, getting your iPhone closer to the paper won’t help – the iPhone camera just can’t focus at small distances. Better keep a reasonable distance, and when the image is focused use the zoom in button to make the relevant portion of the text larger.

Turn on the lights

If it’s too dark in the room, the text on the paper might not be clear enough. If you have trouble distinguishing the characters, so do the Goggles.

Crop it right

Make sure you use the cropper properly, so you don’t include unnecessary lines or shadows. If there are other high-contrast elements in the crop area, besides the characters you want to read, they could be misinterpreted.

Refresh less often

Are you in live camera mode, and the Japanese or Chinese text you are trying to get recognized keeps on changing? That’s because the image is moving, and you probably have a refresh rate that’s too high. Just go to the Settings screen in your Goggles and choose a lower refresh rate (like 2 or 5 seconds). You can also choose “none” – to get to refresh at all. Then you’ll need to tap the screen whenever you want to recognize text.

Analyze

Don’t forget the Analyze button! Some Asian characters can be pretty similar, so maybe Goggles’ best guess wasn’t the right character this time. If you got a wrong character, try the Analyze function – you’ll get the option of choosing a better match.

Lost in Japan was the World’s First Japanese character reader for iPhone. It was launched in May 2010 and quickly became popular. However, this app was limited to one character only so.

The main difference between Lost in Japan and Japan Goggles is the number of charcaters each app ca recognize.
With Lost in Japan, you take a photo on onle one character and get it’s meaning. Japan Goggles is a swiss army knife for anyone serious about looking up Japanese words. It can input several words at a time, from three input modes: live camera, still photo and album. Japan Goggles displays both the reading and meaning of the selected word and even can pass the recognized text to Google Translate.

Basically, Lost in Japan is like an apetizer while Japan Goggles is more like a four course meal!
